Dave's Tank SdKfz 234/4
Apr 27, 2015 #1 Way back in 1964 Airfix released their interpretation of the German 8-wheeled SdKfz 234/4 armoured car, armed with the 7.5cm PaK 40. Although it's probably best known for its faults, 51 years on I decided to have a go at a demo build of what has always been one of my favourite Airfix armour models.

The Sd Kfz 234 family was made up of four vehicles, each with different armament. The Sd Kfz 234/1 had the 20mm KwK 38, the Sd Kfz 234/2 a 50mm Kwk 39 gun in an enclosed turret, the Sd Kfz 234/3 the short barreled 75mm KwK 51 and the Sd Kfz 234/4 a long barreled 75mm PaK 40 anti-tank gun.

The Sd.Kfz. 234 ( Sonderkraftfahrzeug 234, Special Purpose Vehicle 234), was a family of armoured cars designed and built in Germany during World War II. The vehicles were lightly armoured, armed with a 20, 50 or 75 mm main gun, and powered by a Tatra V12 diesel engine. [3] The Sd.Kfz. 234 broadly resembles the appearance of Sd.Kfz. 231 (8 rad).

The s.Pz.Sp.Wg. (7,5 cm) Sd.Kfz.234/4 (full name: Schwerer Panzerspähwagen 7.5 cm Sonderkraftfahrzeug 234/4 Panzerabwehrkanonenwagen) was a relatively improvised variant on the Sd.Kfz.234 chassis, created in late 1944 to prevent PaK40s from falling behind during the constant retreat of the Germans on all fronts.

The inside of the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 was crammed enough without an extra, redundant steering wheel and seat in the middle of the fighting compartment, so this would make some sense. On the other hand, the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 in the Patton Museum definitely has a rear driving station. As the /4 replaced the /3 on the production line somewhat hurriedly.

From the limited photos available so far, the factory-applied 3-colour scheme used on the Sd.Kfz.234/4 would appear quite uniform. Closer examination though reveals some slight differences, particularly on the right fender above the second wheel and on the gun shield. The Sonderkraftfahrzeug or Sd.Kfz. 234 Panzerspähwagen was an improved version of the earlier Sd.Kfz. 231. The development began in 1940, and the 234/4 was the last of the Sd.Kfz. 234 variants. It housed a 75 mm PaK 40/46 gun and an MG 42 in an open-topped superstructure.
